February 18, 2025

Present Continuous in Brazilian Portuguese

The Present Continuous (Presente Contínuo) in Brazilian Portuguese is used to describe actions that are happening right now or ongoing actions in progress. It’s similar to the present continuous tense in English.

Structure

The Present Continuous is formed using:

  1. The verb estar (to be) conjugated in the present tense.
  2. A main verb in its gerund form (ending in -ando, -endo, or -indo).

Comparing to English

In english you use verb TO BE + VERB+ING (IS DOING, IS EATING, IS SLEEPING…)

Ele está comendo – He is eating
Eu estou dormindo – I am sleeping

Formation

  • Verbs ending in -ar → Replace -ar with -ando.
    • Example: falar → falando (speaking)
  • Verbs ending in -er → Replace -er with -endo.
    • Example: comer → comendo (eating)
  • Verbs ending in -ir → Replace -ir with -indo.
    • Example: dormir → dormindo (sleeping)

Examples

  1. Estou falando com ele.
    (I am speaking with him.)
